Caroline Price, Bozeman, MT

Welcome to my website! The beautiful colors and patterns found in nature are my favorite subjects. Lately I am painting watercolor flyfishing flies and trout and selling them as notecards and framed prints. I paint the fish from photographs taken in the few seconds before the fish is released back in the river. Every fish is unique, depending on their habitat and diet. The drips of color in her trout watercolor prints reflect the watery world of the trout and highlight their bright colors. My primary mediums are watercolor, pastel, and pencil. In the past I have taught preschool and Spanish language to the elementary grades and adults. Check out my notecards and art for sale at Heyday, Cello, Urban Kitchen, and Café M in Bozeman, and Dan Bailey’s in Livingston, the Sage Lodge in Paradise Valley, Thistle Creek in Big Timber, and the Madison River Fishing Company in Ennis, MT.

I was born in New York, but my father's family had Montana roots, so we would come to Flathead Lake every summer. I would cry leaving Flathead Lake every summer, it felt more like home. I went camping, picked cherries off the tree and sold them on the side of the road, learned to shoot my brother's BB gun, and caught and cleaned a fish at a young age. When I was about 5 years old, we went on a camping trip to Cold Lake, and while my parents were setting up camp, I caught several fish by myself on a spinning rod. That is when dad put a fly rod in my hand and taught me to flyfish.

Paintbrushes were in my hands at an early age. I took several art classes at The Hotchkiss School, where I went to boarding school in CT. While I hoped to pursue art at Colorado College, my father urged me to take finance and economics classes. He had worked on Wall St. in New York City, and that was his plan for me. After studying and living in Spain during my college years, I found International Finance was an appealing way to land a good job in New York, use my Spanish, and take art classes on the side. I was reunited with an old friend and classmate, Will Price, in New York. We were married in 1997, and the common theme at our wedding was Montana. His father's family also has Montana roots. We lived in Evanston, IL while he was at Kellogg Business School, then moved to San Francisco, CA. Our boys Jack and Luke were born in CA, and we often took them to the Sierras to learn to fish...first with a little Zepco rod and then a fly rod. We made frequent summer trips to Montana and Wyoming, fishing the rivers and exploring. Will and I both felt that homesick feeling when we left Montana. Skiing brought us to the Sierras often, and finally, we all decided we needed to move to Montana, where the rivers and the mountains could be part of our everyday life. We have never looked back

My Background

Art has always been a part of my life, drawing subjects that I love, such as our pets, or beautiful landscapes in special places. Lately, I have been inspired by the world of fishing in Montana...the fish and the flies that are carefully tied to lure them.

My Medium

I have used many different mediums, such as acrylics, pencils, and pastels. I used to have a mural business, painting in both acrylic and house paint on a large scale. Lately, I am using watercolor most often. I have enjoyed the bright colors of pastels, and the fine detail of the pencil.

My Inspiration

I enjoy hiking, biking, and being on the rivers of Montana. I draw my inspiration from the environment around me, the light and shadows in nature, animals, and birds. The natural world continues to amaze me every day.
